Peter Rabbit Cottage, must-see accommodation in Bridgetown, WA

By | 12 Nov 2022

Peter Rabbit cottage is the perfect country cottage for a weekend getaway in WA’s southwest, nestled in Kangaroo Gully, Bridgetown.

Nestled in the hills in Bridgetown is a beautiful sight: Peter Rabbit Cottage. This luxurious accommodation in the south west corner of WA is everything you’d expect it to be and so much more.

It’s a country cottage that irrevocably belongs in this quaint little town, with a pace that favours rest and relaxation. If you possess a fierce animosity towards rabbits, this is not the Airbnb for you. For the rest of us, expect plenty of Peter Rabbit decor and all the cosiness you’d expect in a country cottage in Bridgetown, right down to wild rabbits hopping through the yard. The only thing missing was Mr McGregor’s garden, though I wouldn’t be surprised to find a well-tended vegie patch nearby.

If you’re driving down from Perth, take time to indulge in an early lunch at Bunbury Farmers Market. From there, turn off onto the South Western Highway and this will take you all the way through to Bridgetown. On your way through the countryside, your first stop should be Boyanup. Peruse luxurious homewares at Rustic French Living and fine woodwork at the neighbouring Tree Memories Furniture Gallery.

As you drive south, savour the endless hills, wildflowers and orchards, the endless blue sky and crisp, fresh air. Your next stop: Donnybrook. Although it’s known for its orchards, you’ll be spoilt for choice for places to stretch your legs — my personal favourite is Donny Books, where you can stock up on books to read at your Bridgetown getaway. Your last stop before Bridgetown is Balingup, where you can enjoy the sunshine as you devour cake and hot chocolate, or wander down by the stream.

On your way to Peter Rabbit Cottage, stop by The Stables IGA in Bridgetown for a few supplies — because once you reach the house, you won’t want to leave.

Peter Rabbit Cottage is perfect for your weekend away in Bridgetown

Peter Rabbit Cottage is a short hop from town; let your car amble through the hills and along the tree-lined street. In spring, the ornamental flowering plums will herald your arrival with a shower of pink, and you’ll know you’ve arrived when you reach the white picket fence.

The Cottage is picture perfect, white clad against a stunning backdrop of rolling hills. The delicate crunch of your tyres rolling onto the driveway will help you unwind. Outside, birds tweet and flit through the trees and the air is beautifully silent. As you step out of your car, close your eyes and relish the silence; just take a moment.

Breathe.

Take those deep breaths you’ve been meaning to take.

Once you finish those long, deep breaths, step inside — you’ll feel right at home. This cosy country cottage features an abundance of sumptuous blankets and pillows and sofas that were made for sinking into. Under your feet, you’ll feel polished wooden floors and plush carpets.

With three bedrooms downstairs and one upstairs, you’re spoilt for choice. The Peter Rabbit room is a haven overlooking the hills, with everything you’d want for a peaceful soak in the tub or a lazy day in bed. The front room is equipped with a workstation while the other downstairs room opens out to its own deck. Upstairs, you’ll find three beds layered with blankets and a corner made for Netflix and chill.

Speaking of which, you’ll find TVs in every bedroom and the main living area, though you may find it’s the perfect time to take a break from the screen.

It’s the cottage you never knew you needed

If you’re looking at staying in Bridgetown, check out Peter Rabbit Cottage. It was the perfect accommodation for our girls trip in August and it would be an idyllic location for an Easter getaway. Peter Rabbit is dotted throughout the cottage, from the decor to the glassware to the books on the shelves. You’ll find picture books written by Beatrix Potter, as well as country home magazines and an array of books with titles for almost everyone.

Winter travellers can keep their tootsies warm thanks to the abundance of plush blankets, electric blankets and heaters, while summer travellers can chill out thanks to the reverse cycle split system air conditioning.

The kitchen is fully equipped with all that you’d need, the pantry even comes stocked with staples you might need and all the Peter Rabbit themed crockery you could imagine. If you find yourself standing by the sink, glance out the window now and then and you might even catch a glimpse of Peter Rabbit himself.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll find pleasant surprises around every corner… but why spoil the surprise, I’ll let you discover those for yourself. To find out more, visit Peter Rabbit Cottage on AirBnB.

What to do in Bridgetown

The perfect answer is nothing. Do nothing. Relax, unwind, and do nothing. But that’s not to say the town offers nothing, in fact, far from it. If you can peel yourself away from your cottage, head to Bridgetown’s main street, otherwise known as Hampton Street or the South Western Highway. Park just south of The Stables IGA, and work your way up the main road and back down again, stepping into each of the stores along the way.

You’ll find The Rabbit Hole, an artistic hub, as well as antique stores, clothing stores, Ooh La Lollipop and even a toy store, Paper Planes Co. My favourite is FATS: Food, Art, Toys and Santa. You’ll find this jolly venue at the northern end of Hampton Street. Bring your appetite, because their bagels are not to be missed.
